When I was in college I’d hang out with my friends every day. We’d meet at the cafe, gym or some other campus common area. Those moments were great opportunities to share knowledge, get advice, or shoot the breeze. It was easy to get together and connect back in those days.
After graduation, these spontaneous meetings were impossible to come by. We had to be deliberate in our efforts to connect face-to-face. We set up regular meetings so that we can occasionally see one another. Although the topics of our conversation changed, the fellowship and camaraderie of our youth remained.
These gatherings eventually become more spread out as our jobs got more demanding and families grew. Then finally it stopped altogether. Did the need for conversation and community end? No, it required more effort and planning to make happen regularly.
Enter the Brothers’ Retreat
We all have families, jobs, and (some of us) side hustles. In addition to all of that, we want to maintain the communities of friends we’ve built over the years. The Brothers’ Retreat is a way to make that happen.
The Brothers’ Retreat is a weekend out the year where friends and friends of friends get together to reconnect and catch up with each other. We only do it once a year because, again, most of us have families with responsibilities. But, while we are on the retreat, we devout 2 or 3 days to hang out, getting advice from one another, sharing knowledge, debate, get a different perspective, and overall help each other level up. The highlights of the retreat are campfire discussion, family-style dinners, ATVing, fishing, and visiting the gun range.
Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.
Proverbs 27:17
If you need a community of guys (or ladies) to hang out with, I suggest running your own Brothers’ retreat. There’s a bit of planning involved but it is well worth it. If you need help organizing, I plan on writing a “how-to” guide that explains how to start your own yearly retreat. Sign up to my mailing list to be notified when that article and the others I write become available.
